Exiles is a modern mythological fiction work that blends stories from our past with the grim realities of the present.
There is a challenge in writing about the stories, myths and reminiscences that make up the collective memory of our land. Unlike those from distant shores, these belong to a faith that is still alive. You cannot play with them the way you can with Egyptian, Greek or Norse mythology; for while their Gods have long retreated beyond the veil, ours still live within us.
The attempt in EXILES is therefore, to be respectful and faithful while constructing a story that knows that it is fiction and does not pretend to be anything more. The old tales are of two kinds – one defines our faith and history while the other uses gods, demons and other magical creatures merely as instruments to construct stories about us mortals and our flawed ways. This book is an effort to write a story like the latter.
So, while some of the foundations of the tale do come from our ancient identities and will be familiar; the majority is a fantasy constructed upon that foundation, a modern fable trying to tell a story like the old days… of gods and demons… and the human lives caught among them.
